Three Ways To Produce Hydrogen By Electrolyzing Water

1. Hydrogen production by alkaline electrolysis of water

The diaphragm of the electrolytic water hydrogen production tank is mainly made of non-asbestos materials and plays the role of gas separation. The electrolyte of industrial alkaline water electrolyzers usually uses potassium hydroxide solution with a mass fraction of 20% to 30%. The operating temperature of the electrolyzer is 70 to 80°C, the operating current density is about 0.25 amperes/cm2, and the gas pressure generated is 0.1 ~ 1.6 MPa, the total efficiency is 62% ~ 82%. Alkaline water hydrogen production is a mature technology with low investment and operating costs, but there are problems such as alkali loss, corrosion, and high energy consumption.

2. Pure water electrolysis to produce hydrogen

Different from the electrolysis of water for hydrogen production, the proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis of water for hydrogen production uses a perfluorosulfonic acid proton exchange membrane with good chemical stability, proton conductivity and gas separation instead of a non-asbestos separator as the solid electrolyte, which can effectively prevent electrons transfer to improve the safety of electrolytic cells.

3. Hydrogen production by high-temperature solid oxide electrolysis of water

High-temperature solid oxide water electrolysis for hydrogen production is different from alkaline water electrolysis and PEM water electrolysis. High-temperature solid oxide water electrolysis for hydrogen production uses solid oxide as the electrolyte material. The operating temperature is 800~1000. The electrochemical performance of the hydrogen production process Significantly improved efficiency.
