Hydrogen production through water electrolysis is a relatively convenient method of producing hydrogen. Direct current is passed into an electrolytic tank filled with electrolyte, and water molecules undergo an electrochemical reaction on the electrodes and decompose into hydrogen and oxygen.
In the chlor-alkali industry, a large amount of relatively pure hydrogen is produced as a by-product. In addition to being used for the synthesis of hydrochloric acid, the remaining gas can also be purified to produce ordinary hydrogen or pure hydrogen. For example, the hydrogen used in the Second Chemical Plant is a by-product of electrolyzed brine.
